FAQ

Q. What causes TMJ pain and why did I get it?

A. The most common signs and symptoms of a temporomandibular disorder are:

  • Pain in the jaw
  • Earache or stuffy feeling in ears
  • Facial pain
  • Headache
  • Restricted opening
  • Clicking or popping in the jaw joints
  • Pain when chewing or opening wide

All of the possible causes of TMJ pain are still not completely known, and many of the symptoms may be due to other disorders mimicing a temporomandibular disorder.TMJ pain can affect anyone, but is most commonly seen in woman in their child bearing years. There are multiple factors that have been associated with the 50 or so signs and symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMJ) and every patient presents with their own combination of these. This makes it necessary to tailor treatment to each patient's individual needs.

Q. Could my headaches be related to a TMJ problem?

A. Yes. There are many forms of headaches, but the most common type of headache is that caused by contracted muscles, many of which are related to the lower jaw.

Q. Could my neck and shoulder pain be related to a TMJ problem?

A. Yes. If forward head posture or clenching of your teeth are present you will most likely have pain in your neck and shoulder muscles. If there is a problem present in your temporomandibular joints you will also most likely have neck and shoulder pain.

Q. What will happen without treatment?

A. It depends on the nature of your problem. Some problems become self limiting while others progress to a more serious chronic pain problem which becomes much more difficult to treat.

Q. What forms of treatment are available and are they safe?

A. The most common form of treatment is an oral orthotic or splint. The design is based on the patient's needs and may be designed for day-time or night-time wear.Other forms of treatment available as needed are:

  • Electrotherapy
  • Joint injections to unlock your jaw
  • Moist heat application
  • Medications
  • Phonophoresis
  • Prolo-therapy
  • Spray and stretch
  • Tens
  • Trigger point injections
  • Ultrasound

All forms of treatment used are safe and meet the standard of care.

Q. How much will treatment cost and will my insurance pay for it?

A. Treatment costs vary depending on the complexity of your problem and the estimated number of appointments and length of time needed for your treatment. All treatment is rendered with a flat treatment rate given before treatment is started so you know what your maximum costs will be.

Q. How long will treatment take?

A. The length of treatment varies based on the nature of your problem, the length of time you have had your problem, and the way in which your body responds to treatment.
